The
globalization of exchanges, markets, and education. Which strategy for which
text type? For which audience?
Issue coordinators: Georgiana Lungu-Badea, Dana Crăciun
http://www.translationes.uvt.ro/
The globalization of
exchanges renders certain professions obsolete, relativizes them, and does not
stimulate their specific market. The translation market seems to be in that situation
as well. A current survey of this market shows that it is governed by
consumption and production rules, by political and economic forces. Of the
manifold configurations of the translation market, national and/or local
markets function according to different principles. There is no
―emancipation‖ involved: this would have required observing and
applying the principles that govern translation at an international level. The
first category functions within an institutionalized frame, while the second,
as if it could behave differently, circumvents the globalization of practices
and recognition (those regarding an adequate remuneration included). Given this
array of translation markets, we suggest to contributors to identify the market
for which universities train translators. Once this has been identified, it
would be extremely useful to analyze the different methods of teaching and
practicing translation.

Traduire le mouvement du sens: Germen et
Gestalten en sémantique textuelle des formes
France DUPUIS
o Abstract: This study aims at convincing translation specialists that prior
to the very act of translating, it is essential to become familiar with a
Theory of Meaning. Only then will it become possible to bring about a truly
efficient reading and a semantic interpretation of the original text. Based on
works initiated in Lexical Semantics, an original Text Semantics approach is
suggested, as well as an analysis of the questions of Meaning carried out in
the Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, in Phenomenology and in other works, notably
those of E. Coseriu. To illustrate this theoretical framework, we offer in the
semantic analysis of Chanson noire, a poem by Louis Aragon.
o Key words: Translators prerequisites, theory of meaning, semantic
interpretation, text semantics, theory of semantic forms, semantic framewok,
semantic canvas, issues in meaning approach, semantic scanning of the
utterer-centered field, phenomenology, Aragon, Chanson noire.

Lost in translation in the middle of nowhere
Tatjana MARJANOVI
o Abstract: Essentially a personal account of how translation is taught and
assessed in the English department at the University of Banja Luka, this paper
has been written in a very down-to-earth tone aiming to explain a broader
social and educational context which determines the way translation is
perceived in and outside the classroom. Going beyond a critical overview of how
the departments translation class is managed, the paper ends with practical
suggestions as to how translation teaching and assessment could be improved
despite a number of institutional limitations surrounding it.
o Key words: translation, educational and social context, teaching and
assessment.

traducteur.
o Abstract: This article intends to present the difficulties that the
Applied Foreign Languages students, especially those at the West University of
Timişoara, experience when writing their Bachelors theses. In addition,
it reflects on how teachers manage to meet apprentice translators expectations
in a key moment in their lives, i.e. when graduating from university and
beginning their professional activity. Teachers play a significant role: they
guide students closely while helping them to become independent. They
collaborate with students and stimulate them into gaining a certain confidence
and independence that will help them in their professional activities and in
their lives. In collaborating with students, teachers help them face the
challenges of a new society, characterised by employment instability.
o Key-words: Bachelors Thesis, translation commentary, self-revision,
translation reading, teacher-student collaboration.

―globalizzazione‖.
o Parole-chiave: Sagredo, trattati, architettura, misure, classicismo
o Abstract: The Medidas del romano [Measurements of a Roman
building], is a manual for the reproduction of proportions, orders, moldings of
ancient buildings: the first architectural treaties written and published
outside Italy in 1526, by Diego de Sagredo (Burgos, 1490-Toledo, 1528 ca.).
Based on the Latin Vitruvio of Giocondo da Verona, the vulgarization of
Ciseriano, the De re aedificatoria [On the art of building] by Alberti,
it depicts the Italian Renaissance classicism as a decorative, not conceptual
resource. Though translated in many languages, it was never published in
Italian because its cultural ideology, soon to be popular all over Europe, was
resented in Italy. Later on, it was reintroduced in the Peninsula by foreign
artists as part of a historical phenomenon that today can be identified as a
―globalization‖ process.
o Key words: Sagredo, treaties, architecture, measures, classicism

The translation of Italian opera librettos in the nineteenth
century: historical and cultural milestones
Iulia COSMA
o Abstract: Nella storia moderna della traduzione in romeno, il periodo
1840-1900, come sottolinea la studiosa Georgiana Lungu Badea in Un capitol
de traductologie românească. Studii de istorie a traducerii (III) [Un
capitolo di traduttologia romena. Studi di storia della traduzione (III)], è
contrassegnato dalle ricerche identitarie della lingua di arrivo. In
quest'ottica, la traduzione integrale o parziale di un numero significativo di
libretti d'opera dall'italiano al romeno si rivela un fenomeno la cui analisi
possa offrire dei validi temi di riflessione sia dal punto di vista della
storia della traduzione, sia di quello della storia della lingua e della storia
culturale.
o Parole chiave: storia moderna della traduzione in romeno, il
Teatro Italiano di Bucarest, critica musicale, proselitismo culturale, storia
culturale
o Abstract: The period between 1840 and 1900 saw the full or partial
translation of a significant number of Italian opera librettos, a phenomenon
whose analysis can prove most insightful from the point of view of translation
history as well as from that of the history of language and of cultural
history. The translation of the Italian librettos was carried out in an
environment marked not so much by cultural endeavours, but rather economic ones,
taking into account the level of the publics musical and cultural illiteracy
and their reduced financial means.
o Key words: history of modern Romanian translation, Italian Theatre in
Bucharest, music reviews, cultural proselytism, cultural history

o Abstract: The present paper depicts Dante's
―language of the ineffable‖ in light of Translation Theory and of
some structures of this language present in M. L. Lozinskij's Russian
translation of the Divine Comedy. Much has been written about Dante's use of
language as a way to express mystical truths, but not from a Translation
Studies perspective. Therefore, our aim is to prove the
importance of ―translating‖ the divine truths in human language for
Dante's poetics and discover how that kind of ―translation‖ is
being recreated in the Russian version of the Comedy at a textual level.
o Key
words: Dante's
―language of the ineffable‖, the metaphors of the image and of the
seal, the doctrine of the image and of similarity, the Dantesque creation as
translation, Lozinskij's translation, language of the ineffable in translation.
